Initial Ceremony, January 19, 2155

The Coalition of Planets was a mutual-defense alliance; from governments represented in the Alpha and Beta governments; created between United Earth, the Confederacy of Vulcan the Andorian Empire and the Tellarites.

Late 2154

The Coalition was proposed by Nathan Samuels, the Prime Minister of United Earth in late 2154.

It was designed as an effort to build upon the work of Starfleet Captain Jonathan Archer of Enterprise NX-01, in organizing a joint military operation amongst these powers to thwart a Romulan plot to ignite interstellar war between those worlds (“Demons, Terra Prime, ENT”; “Balance of Terror, TOS”).   NOTE:  Their goal may have been to thwart the establishment of the Federation (obviously implying that they knew the future, speculation from Enterprise series).

2155

On January 19, 2155 initial talks for the formation of the Coalition took place on Earth in San Francisco and the participants included dignitaries from United Earth, Vulcan, the Andorian Empire, Rigel, Denobula, Coridan, and Tellar (“Demons, Terra Prime, ENT”).

March

In March of 2155, the Coalition Compact was finalized and signed, with Prime Minister Samuels as one of the signatories (ENT novel: The Good That Men Do).  The conference was organized by United Earth; presided over by Minister Nathan Samuels, in San Francisco on Earth, and overseen by both the Space Probe Agency (UESPA) and Earth-Starfleet (“Demons, ENT”).

  2156-2160

As the Romulan aggression heightened, the Coalition strengthened.    Together they eventually defeated the Romulan Star Empire at the Battle of Cheron; effectively ending the war (“In a Mirror, Darkly – Part II, ENT”; “Star Trek: Generations” production art).

2161

The Coalition of Planets proved to be one of the most vital steps leading to the formation of the UFP in 2161 (”These Are the Voyages…, ENT”; ENT novel: The Good That Men Do.)

United Earth Emblem

United Earth Emblem

United Earth is the name of the planetary state created through the unification of Earth in the 22nd Century following first contact in 2063United Earth continued to exist as a political subdivision of the United Federation of Planets when its government helped found that interstellar state in 2161 (Star Trek: First Contact & Enterprise, the series).

 –  Definition from Memory Alpha

Although there is no direct canon evidence for this, the United Earth is probably a parliamentary government.  According to the novel, Starfleet: Year One, the United Earth Government is headed by a President and a Prime Minster (see also: Tales of the Dominion War short story: Eleven Hours Out).  Members of the United Earth Cabinet receive the title of “Minister” (“Demons, Terra Prime, ENT”; ENT novel: The Good That Men Do).

Both United Earth President’s office and Starfleet was located in San Francisco (novel: Starfleet: Year One).

Planetary bodies that had major Human settlements or military installations on them in the 2150’s included:

In the Sol System:

·              Earth

          Luna (Moon): Lunar Colonies

·              Mars: Martian Colonies

·              Asteroid belt: Several bases and mining installations in the asteroid belt (“Terra Nova, ENT).

·              “Jupiter Station” is apparently a military drydock / repair facility in orbit around the gas giant Jupiter (“Silent Enemy, ENT).

·              Titan (largest moon of Saturn): Titan is used for hazardous environment training by Starfleet, though it is unclear if there are any permanent bases or installations on the moon of Saturn, or if away teams are simply dropped off for training (“Strange New World, ENT”).

In other solar systems:

·              Alpha Centauri: Proxima Colony

·              Deneva planet: Deneva Colony

·              Terra Nova planet: first Human colony outside the Sol System (contact lost in 2081, reestablished in 2151)

·              Vega Star (or Alpha Lyrae): Vega Colony (Vega is the central star of the Vega System)

Agencies of the ‘United Earth’ (“Broken Bow; The Expanse; The Forge, ENT”; “Court Martial, TOS”):

·              The United Earth Space Probe Agency [c. 2064- ]

·              Earth-Starfleet [2132-2161]

·              Military Assault Command Operations (MACO) [mid 2100’s]

·              The Earth Cargo Authority (22nd century)

·              Earth Cargo Service (22nd century)

The United Earth Diplomatic Corps (22nd century)

·              The United Earth Embassy on Vulcan (22nd century)

A Time-line of Significant Events:

c. 2064 – 2067

Not long after first contact with the Vulcans in 2063, a ‘United Earth’ is envisioned and pursued.

 c. 2078 – 2079

However, the dreams of a United Earth were seriously in doubt due to the ‘post-atomic horror’ that some of Earth began to endure (“In a Mirror, Darkly – Part II, ENT”).

2100

The year 2100 marks the beginning of the ‘European Hegemony’ (“Up The Long Ladder, TNG”).

2113

Australia maintains its autonomy, deciding not to join the United Earth Government.

2150

In 2150, Australia finally joins the United Earth government (sources: Enterprise exploration timeline on Official Web Site, Star Trek Chronology, “Attached, TNG”).   This marked the unifying of ALL human governments on Earth into one organization.

2155

United Earth was responsible for the creation of the Coalition of Planets in 2155 (“Demons and Terra Prime, ENT”).   The opening conference was overseen by both the Space Probe Agency (UESPA) and Earth-Starfleet (“Demons, ENT”).

2156-2160

The Romulan War is at full scale, with the Romulan Star Empire targeting Earth trying to turn the various races of Earths region of space against one another (speculation from “Balance of Terror, TOS”).   Their goal may have been to thwart the establishment of the Federation (obviously implying that they knew the future, specualation from Enterprise series).

2160

In 2160 the Romulans suffered humiliating defeat at the Battle of Cheron by the Earth/Andorian/Vulcan/Tellarite alliance effectively ending the war (“In a Mirror, Darkly – Part II, ENT”; “Star Trek: Generations” production art).

2161

At the wars end in 2161, the founding four species of the Coalition of Planets, the Denobulans, the Rigelians, the Coridanites, joined together becoming the Federation (“These Are the Voyages…, ENT”).

Thus United Earth not only becomes one of the founding Member States of the United Federation of Planets, they are ultimately responsible for it.

United Federation of Planets

The United Federation of Planets (UFP) is commonly referred to as just The Federation.

It is an interstellar federal republic, composed of planetary governments that agreed to exist semi-autonomously under a single central government, and to share their knowledge and resources in peaceful cooperation and space  exploration (“Battle Lines, DS9”; “Innocence, VOY”).

The Federation Starfleet Charter

Ronald D. Moore commented that he felt that the Federation Starfleet Charter incorporates military, exploratory, and scientific missions. [1]

The Federation Charter was the document that was ratified at that organization’s founding in 2161 (“The Outcast, TNG”; “Zero Hour; These are the Voyages….ENT”).

One excerpt from the Charter:

CHARTER OF THE UNITED FEDERATION OF PLANETS

“We the life forms of the United Federation of Planets determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, and to reaffirm faith in the fundamental rights of sentient beings, in the dignity and worth of all life forms, in the equal rights of members of planetary systems large and small, and to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of interstellar law can be maintained, and to promote social progress and better standards of living on all worlds…”

The text is as seen in: “The Void, VOY”.

Time-line of Selected Events:

2154 – 2161

In 2154, to thwart the Romulan’s aggression; a temporary alliance was formed by the Humans, Vulcans, Andorians and Tellarites (“United, ENT”).

After the crisis, these four species remained together, founding the precursor to The Federation, called the Coalition of Planets (2155), a year later.  Other species soon joined: the Denobulans, the Rigelians and the Coridanites, (Demons, ENT”).

Over the next several years, the tension between the Coalition members and the Romulans exploded into full scale war.  This of course served to strengthen the ties between the members of the Coalition.

After the war, in 2161, the Coalition of Planets proved to be one of the most vital steps leading to the formation of The Federation (”These Are the Voyages…, ENT”; ENT novel: The Good That Men Do).

The Federations headquarters are on Earth, in San Francisco (“The Outcast, TNG”; “Zero Hour, ENT”; ”These Are the Voyages…, ENT”).

Its major neighboring sovereignties were the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire, the Cardassian Union and the Ferengi Alliance.  Other neighboring sovereignties were the Tzenkethis, the Tholian Assembly, the Breen Confederacy and the Xindi.

NX-class Starship

– GO BACK to ‘Ships Named Enterprise’

After years of testing the warp-five engine by the NX-Program, Earth-Starfleet developed the NX-class Starship.

The NX-class was the first class of starship built with the warp-five engine.   This warp-five engine that took over thirty years to develop at the Warp-Five Complex (“Broken Bow, ENT”).

The NX-class starships enabled Humanity to explore beyond its neighboring star systems.

It would appear that the NX-class starships, set the standard for the over-all design of a starship that would become the norm for Federation starships.  For example; the Access Tubes (later to be known as Jefferies Tubes ) and the dual-nacelle design first employed by Cochrane’s Phoenix; thus putting an end to the eXperimental, ring-shaped nacelles of Enterprise (XCV-330).

Serving in the United Earth-Starfleet , the first ship of the NX-class was Enterprise (NX-01), commissioned in 2151, under the command of Captain Jonathan Archer (“Broken Bow, ENT”).

The second ship, Columbia (NX-02), was commissioned in 2154, under the command of Captain Erika Hernandez (“Affliction, ENT”).

If the before mentioned NX-Program continued to follow the order of the United States’ space shuttle program, the NX-03 and NX-04 would be named Challenger and Discovery respectively.

Constitution-class Starship

A Constitution-class starship is also known as Starship-class.   They were designed for long duration missions with minimal outside support.

The Jefferies design first seen abroad the NX-class starships, and the dual-nacelle design first employed by Cochrane’s Phoenix, had become standard for Federation starships.   To be precise, the Constitution-class starships are descendants of the NX-class starships.

The Constitution-class lineage was launched some time prior to 2245, and served as Federation-Starfleet  front-line vessels for much of the 23rd century.

In 2267 there were around twelve Constitution-class starships in the fleet (“Tomorrow is yesterday, TOS”).

The ships were probably decommissioned at the end of the 23rd century (non-canon).

It is probably safe to assume that the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) was the first Federation-Starfleet ship to bear the name Enterprise.

Warp Five Program

Warp Five Program

The Warp Five program was the name given to a research and development project commissioned by UESPA to develop a warp five engine for Starfleet.  Before the program began, Human ships were limited to a speed just under warp 2. Doctor Zefram Cochrane and Doctor Henry Archer were two of the main scientists involved in the project; they did much of their work at the Warp Five Complex on Earth.  The project was immediately succeeded by the NX program, to develop prototype ships with a working warp five engine.

Warp Five Complex

Through the hard work and petitioning of Archer and Cochrane, the Warp 5 Complex was opened on Earth in 2119, just a few weeks before Cochrane’s disappearance (ENT novelization: “Broken Bow”).

It was located just outside Bozeman, Montana (“Singularity, ENT”).

Dr. Henry Archer and Dr. Cochrane at the dedication ceremony; Cochrane makes what would come to be an historic speech:

“On this site, a powerful engine will be built... an engine that will someday help us to travel a hundred times faster than we can today. Imagine it: thousands of inhabited planets at our fingertips. And we'll be able to explore those strange new worlds... and seek out new life and new civilizations. This engine will let us go boldly... where no man has gone before.”

The terminology and phrases Cochrane coined in this speech would be used in Starfleet for centuries to come. The speech would be revisited upon the launch of Enterprise, the first starship to benefit from the Warp Five engine (“Broken Bow, ENT”).

Warp Five Engine

The warp five engine was the result of many decades of research and development into making faster starships.

The NX class was the first Earth starship to utilize the warp five engine.  Unfortunately, by the time his engine was finally used, Henry Archer had died of Clarke’s Disease. However, his son, Jonathan Archer, captained the first NX-class starship, the Enterprise (“Broken Bow, ENT”).
