Jefferies Tubes

Captain George William Jefferies

Captain George William Jefferies was a Starfleet engineer in the 22nd century.    In 2137 he was married to Jennifer Anne MacIntyre (TOS novel: “Home is the Hunter”)

Captain Jefferies was in charge of the engineering team working on the NX Program in 2143; Commander Tucker was on his team (“First Flight, ENT”).   He was still working on the NX Program  when the Enterprise NX-01 was launched in 2151.   Captain Jefferies had occasion to argue with Captain Jonathan Archer over how heavily armed the NX-class should be.   Archer was against increased armament, but after the Xindi crisis began to think Jefferies may have been right (“Home, ENT”).

He was honored with a holo-frame in the Tucker Memorial Building (SCE: ebook The Future Begins).

Captain Jefferies was one of the officers listed on the dedication plaque of Enterprise NX-01.

He was also listed in the group of names of representatives of the United Earth Space Probe Agency (Star Trek: Enterprise set artwork).

Frederick William Jefferies

It wasn’t until the late 22nd century that the Jefferies-designed tubes were named.  This unfortunately did not happen in Captain George Jefferies lifetime.  Frederick William Jefferies, George Jefferies grandson and Starfleet engineer, who also worked on his grandfather’s design, was alive to see this (TOS novel: “Home is the Hunter”).

Jefferies Tubes

On Starfleet vessels, Jefferies tubes; originally referred to as access tubes or access tunnels; are internal maintenance conduits that are used to provide crew access to various ships’ systems.  From these handy locations, any number of problems could be solved.  Doors within the Jefferies tubes can be sealed for safety or security reasons.   Ship schematics of internal structure do not always show Jefferies Tubes, and in some cases show no sign where they could actually fit within the ship.
