USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A)

GO BACK to ‘Ships Named Enterprise’

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A)

A Federation-Starfleet, Constitution–class, Starship

“to boldly go where no man has gone before”

–  Zefram Cochran –

The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A) was the second Federation starship to carry that name.   She was constructed at the San Francisco Fleet Yards and commissioned at the Earth Spacedock facility in 2286.

General Info

She was launched at the order of the Federation Council in appreciation of Captain James T. Kirk and his crew’s efforts to prevent the Whale-Probe (Cetacean Probe) from devastating Earth.  The crew initially thought they were going to be assigned to the USS Excelsior, but the new Enterprise was soon revealed, docked behind the Excelsior.  The crew took their stations and the Enterprise left spacedock on a shakedown cruise (TOS movie: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home).

A Refit USS Yorktown

The USS Yorktown was the name of the central starship in Gene Roddenberry’s first Star Trek proposal to NBC in 1964.   In a nod to his original name choice from 1964, Gene suggested that the Yorktown was renamed USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A) explaining why the latter ship seemed to be launched so quickly at the end of Star Trek IV.   The Next Generation fourth season writer’s technical manual also indicates this to be the case.  However, there is no primary evidence to confirm this theory.

In Franz Joseph’s Star Fleet Technical Manual, the USS Yorktown was listed as a Federation, Constitution-class starship, with the registry NCC-1704; that was in service during the latter half of the 23rd century.   In 2268, she was scheduled to deliver vaccines bound for the colony on Theta VII after a rendezvous with the USS Enterprise (“Obsession, TOS”).

According to non-canon literature, this TOS era Yorktown was retired in the early 2270’s (per the comic and FASA).

In 2286, a presumably new Yorktown was under the command of Captain Joel Randolph.  The Whale-Probe disabled the Yorktown, which led to the Enterprise going back in time (TOS movie: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home).  This new Yorktown was probably brought into Spacedock for repairs and renamed Enterprise.

If this was done, it is because the Enterprise was the flagship of the federation and as an homage to Captain Kirk and crew..

This would not be the end of the YorktownIt would be given a second run, because Tuvok’s father served aboard a Yorktown in 2293 (“Flashback, VOY”).

This is of course my personal speculation.
